The Catalina "One-Star at best"
Date: November 14, 2005 Reviewer:
Miami Beach 411 User, Milford, CT
Just returned from there after staying there this weekend (11/11-11/14/05)
after having been reassigned there after our original hotel was
decimated by Wilma...however, we'd never recommend this hotel....although
the beds were comfortable and the staff friendly, that's about
all we can say that's good..we found the place lacking as follows:
1. No towels in room at check-in...we had some in our room the
next day when the room was "cleaned" (beds made and
bathroom sanitized)..only one washcloth for two people. On the
third day when no washcloths were provided we complained to the
front desk - never did see the washcloths.
2. When we checked in the person at the desk asked us to give
him 10 minutes so he could find us a room away from the noise
and music in the lobby - his room assignment was a room 10 feet
behind the front desk...and next to the lobby!! (wonder how long
they laughed over that one)
3. Bedside clock didn't work.
4. Takes over half an hour to get your car out of their "valet"
parking...and when they tell you they'll call you don't believe
it - they don't...we finally went to check and there was the car
sitting outside..
5. No soap in the bathroom.
6. Small safe is BOLTED to the FLOOR!!...You have to be able to
get down to its level to use it!
7. TV only got 5 channels...CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX and UPN.As I said,
the staff was nice - every time we voiced the least little problem
to them they gave us each two free drink vouchers - we went home
with about 20 free drink vouchers. And as with the prior poster
from Canada, our floor wasn't washed either - thankfully we didn't
use the beach so no beach sand. Bottom line?...it's a good enough
place for a party hearty soul to go for fun and a place to crash
overnight (i.e. New Year's Eve, graduation party, etc) - but if
you've ever stayed in hotels before, you're bound to be disappointed
here.

The people of Miami have done a brilliant job of pulling together
and welcoming visitors following the hurricane last week. Not
so unfortunately the Catalina Hotel! Like many others the room
allocated was un-made.
The service on check in was too much of a bother for the 'young
' man on the reception as he had more pressing issues like booking
a date with someone. The valet service is great (if you can give
24 hours notice of when you want your car!)honeslty waiting an
hour is too much! The bar staff are very pleasent - demanding
a tip as 'they work very hard' and ignoring you if you don't leave
one every visit to the bar! The rooms are not finished - woodwork
is very patchy and dirty. Cupboards are not boxed in floors are
dirty. The carpets in the hallway are so dirty its disgusting.
They have completed one building but the main bedroom wing leaves
a lot to be desired in hygiene and comfort standards.
(the smell of paint makes you vomit!) I would recommend this hotel
to anyone with a sadistic streak as the perfect getaway for your
most hated enemy!
The Catalina "Would not recommend the Catalina Hotel"
Date: July 28, 2005 Reviewer:

We stayed at the Catalina Hotel July 2-4. At first we were happy
with what we saw but then our opinion changed based on the following:
1. There were no bathrobes in our room yet somehow I ended up
with a $165 charge that appeared on my credit card 2 days after
we'd checked out. This charge has only been explained to me today,
July 28th after 4 phone calls asking about it. Last week I was
told they would reverse the charge but when I still hadn't seen
it, I called back and was told it was for these non-existent bathrobes.
Now I have to call back again to try and convince them we didn't
get any bathrobes! Not impressed.2. The floor is painted hardwood
and was never mopped while we were there. It got pretty dirty
and we stopped walking in our bare feet.3. After the room was
cleaned, they never left towels. We had to call more than once
each day to get them. One time, we actually went to the front
desk to get them after waiting for an hour - there were no apologies
from them.4. We stayed in the 2nd building and there were some
pretty sad-looking parties going on in the lobby (looked like
friends of the DJ). The music was as loud as if you were in a
nightclub but there were never more than 10-15 people at this
*party*. When leaving the hotel, you had to walk through this
*crowd* of people.
