Riande
Continental "Avoid"
Date: November 7, 2005
Reviewer: Miami
Beach 411 User, London, England
General
conditions: In severe need of re-decoration. The hotel is dirty, all
the corridors have filthy scuff marks on the walls as do the rooms,
it has not seen a lick of paint since art deco times, lighting in
the common parts is glaring economy bulbs, the furniture is massively
outdated and tired, and the carpets are grotty, old and worn. My Remote
control didn't work and when operated manually the TV had bad fuzzy
reception on every channel. The advertised mini bar in the room was
a small empty fridge under the TV. The bathroom had a cutdown plastic
bath, with plastic wall paneling and dirty blue tiling on the floor.
The walls were thin with no sound insulation so I had to contend for
three nights with the insessant manic laughing and nocturnal activites
of the room next door. My internet connection was broken and was told
it would cost 4 dollars per minute (YES 4 DOLLARS each minute !!!!!!!),
if it were working.
The experience at breakfast (promoted as full continental breakfast
"included in price") is just about the meanest and shoddiest
affair I have been unfortonate enough to experience. There are three
nasty looking cereals, and the cereal bowls are strategically designed
to allow just one scoop - smaller than the average coffee cup (not
an exaggeration!) There are two toasters and a stack of cheap bread,
once you have toasted the bread there is NO Butter, but a bowl containing
creamer-sized foil tubs of something which the waiters claimed to
be butter, but in fact is a synthetic chemical paste-like substance
that renders the toast inedible. It is clear the hotel have bought
a cheap bulk assignment to fob the guests off with. In addition to
toast there is a basket of greasy-sponge cup-cakes (No joke!) and
if you are lucky you can get a tea or coffee, but espresso and capuccino
cost extra. Finally, and to add insult to injury, the waitresses hand
out yellow bill receipts (saying suggested tip). This is only one
dollar and I actually felt sorry for these nice latin ladies as judging
by the way the hotel conducts it's business they are probably underpaid,
so I had no qualms in leaving this. For an English man to have a written
request for a tip handed directly to me in a hotel is just extraordinary!
- perhaps not so in America?
Bizarly this hotel is described as an art deco hotel with full facilities,
including room internet access, mini bar etc. Despite the high occupancancy,
and cost of rooms, it is clear the management have tried to cut every
corner imaginable in running this hotel, giving the guests as little
value as possible for their money.

Don't
waste your money at this hotel. Besides dirty rooms with paint chipping
off the walls and ceiling and dirty bathrooms, the staff was very
rude and unpleasant. This place and it's staff has forgotten that
they are a hotel. I would never recommend this hotel. Spend a little
more money and stay someplace else.

I
recently stayed in the Riande Continental because of its price, its
pool, & its proximity to the beach. Unfortunately, that's about
all this hotel has to offer. Although the location is wonderful (being
only a short walk to the beach, Lincoln Road, Ocean Drive, etc.),
the cleanliness of the room and hospitality of the staff were sub-par
at best, which made the time spent there rather unpleasant. Black
scuffs and rust stains lined just about every inch of the walls and
furniture. The air conditioner was broken. The bathroom was too small
to use. The sheets and towels were extremely dirty. The television
only has about 5 channels to offer...I could continue, but I'll just
leave it at that. I honestly have low standards when it comes to hotels
- all I really ask for is clean sheets and a comfy pillow - but the
Riande lacked both. Unless you speak fluent Spanish and enjoy filthy
hotel rooms, I highly suggest paying a little more and staying somewhere
else.
Riande Continental "Comfy and Friendly"

After
reading the reviews of the 5-star hotels, I am very glad I choose
the Riande. Decor is kind of cheesy '70s and rooms are small, but
there is not one drop of attitude to be found here, and it is affordable.
I was able to check in early. Staff were always smiling, friendly,
and helpful. Front desk staff are very professional and fast. And
Willie at the pool-side bar is a joy, as he encourages all of us city-slickers
to slow down and relax. The location can't be beat. Direct beach access.
Sits between the Delano and the Shore Club. We walked to Lincoln Ave
almost every day either to shop, eat, or see the antique market on
Sunday. The only disappointment was the pitiful breakfast, but even
that was minor given the smiles of the wait staff. I encourage everyone
to enjoy the bars, restaurants, and glamour of the 5-stars without
having to pay for it. It was the perfect vacation. I'll be back there
next year. I also recommend Puerto Sagua for heaps of great food at
afforbale prices.
