The Reasons People Don’t Like Miami: 100 Comments and Counting!

October 19, 2007 By Gus in Miscellaneous  | 15 Comments

image

This past Thursday marked the 100th comment on my article, “10 Things I Hate About Miami”.

I wrote the post on a lark - to help pull me out of a writer’s slump - and never imagined it would ignite so many passionate remarks.

Many of the comments center around tension between North American and Latin American culture. Other common frustrations include: people not speaking English, rude drivers, bad customer service, the cost of living, crime, a lack of jobs, dirty streets, and unfriendly people.

Many commenters express how happy they are that they found the article; by reading it and sharing their experience they feel they’re not alone.

One thing I find interesting: all of the commenters sign their name, or a screen name…nobody posts anonymously.

Thank you to all our readers for your participation and insight.

Keep those positive and negative stories coming!

"The Reasons People Don’t Like Miami: 100 Comments and Counting!"

Ana says:

At the beginning of this year I got accepted to FIU at the North Miami campus. I came to visit in March and thank God I did before seriously thinking of moving to Miami! I’ve never seen so many rude, unfriendly, and downright mean people in my life. Every store I went either had employees who spoke no English, or acted like ringing up merchandise was an enormous task. I felt like screaming “It’s your job!”

I’ve traveled many, many places throughout the world, and I also have to give the award of the worlds WORST drivers to Miami. My cousin and I crossed the street one day, and this woman just kept coming at us! She almost hit my cousin! She had a red light too, so there was no reason for her to keep coming at us with such speed. If she had hit one of us I’m sure she would have driven off! I read somewhere Miami has been awarded with the title of having the worst road rage more than once, and I can easily see how they claimed the title.
I’m so happy I didn’t move to Miami! The people are ridiculously rude, the drivers could all easily be admitted into an insane asylum, and everything is outrageoulsy priced. Take my advice, and the advice of everyone on this site, DO NOT MOVE TO MIAMI! DON’T EVEN THINK OF VISITING EITHER! You’ll be doing yourself a giant favor!

Yes there are a lot of rude people in Miami. But you have to remember rudeness is contagious. One person is rude then another to another and so on and on… There are so many unique people in Miami you can find anyone to get along with. There are deff more nice people then rude however. My situation might be a little diff because I am ok looking with good swag. That can really get you far as low as it sounds. Just dress nice and look clean. There are a lot of shady people in Miami so if you look good chances are lower your one of those bum shady people. You don’t have to wear rediculus Armani. Cheap but nice H&M will do ha… No but so many good looking people and driving is shitty but because theres so many people there. If you go in knowing people are so stuck up and rude it actually benefits you cause its not as bad as you thought it would be. Miami is a beautiful city built on great biz… amazing music-Trance, Hip Hop, and Rap… And even some porn! lol Not for everybody but if you like beautiful things beautiful weather and beautiful people you will absoloutely loooooooooooooove it!!!!!!!!  It is the Music capital of the USA I don’t care what anyone says it is!! GO THERE! YOU WILL FALL IN LOOOOOOOOOVE

Michael says:

Miami is an example of how people and local culture can ruin even the most wonderful of locations. I live in Los Angeles and I absolutely hate Miami. It’s quite a shame because the tropical location, city infrastructure and azure blue ocean water make it an ideal place to live.

That is.. until you meet the people who live there.

First. Miami is an extremely ethnocentric location. If you are not “culturally Hispanic” with Spanish as your first language or or at the very least - speak fluent Spanish - even when it’s not required - you will be treated rudely, and subversively denied equal service, jobs and promotions. It is really a shame. You cannot even stop at a gas station without the “multi-uni culture” being shoved down your throat in the form of obscene Hispanic rap, rudeness, unfriendly “tudes’, rude looks, and South American “machismo” culture.

White people make up around 15% of the population, black people even less, and Asian people even less. And I think it’s wrong for such a rude domineering culture to emerge in what is technically supposed to be America. The best parts of Miami are disgustingly materialistic. I mean materialism to the point of isolation and no style. I will take the materialism of Los Angeles over Miami anyday! Visiting Miami taught me materialism comes in 2 distinct ways. People in Miami are the exact opposite from Los Angeles. They are not open minded. And they are not relaxed. The environment inspires tension and I can’t stand it.

The comment’s about the drivers are 100% true. They have the most aggressive and rude drivers anywhere I have ever seen! There is NOTHING “diverse” about Miami as others have suggested. Unless you are culturally Hispanic or have roots in Miami it might be best to avoid this backward metropolitan locale for other, more rewarding, and positive destinations.

Miami is an example of how bad people can ruin a good city.

I thought it was just me. I have been many places all over the world. Miami is one of the worst place to live. Restaurants the restaurant I never felt welcome. People look at me from head to toe. No right to pedestrians. I saw a woman being so rude to an obese man. Come on people. Be nice to each other. I agree that it is contagious so be nice to one another.

Southerner Stuck in Another Culture says:

People in Miami, in general, are very rude, obnoxious and self centered. It’s a “me” culture here, and if you’re one of the few who has manners or cares about others, you get very disappointed about how the culture promotes materialism, vanity, snobbiness, gossiping, profanity and insults. Just look at how the people here treat their children, they take them out late at night to bars and restaurants up to midnight, which is bad for their development. Then they throw their pets onto the street when they can’t take care of them or if they have an accident in the house when they don’t take them outside or feed them regularly. They threaten to run you over with their cars if you don’t run through a yellow light turning left against oncoming traffic. Then the “nicer” ones are friendly to your face, providing you “kiss their ass”, and then gossip about you behind your back. Only a few will help a person in need when their car is stranded on the road or a person is lost. Even your neighbor who asks you for help and you always give it, including money, won’t help you when you have an emergency (they literally slam the door in your face). If you ask for help and don’t speak Spanish, you’re insulting them unless you apologize that you don’t speak their language. And forgot about finding a job here if you are unemployed and don’t speak Spanish, it’s impossible to work a minimum wage job here just speaking English. In general, and fortunately there are a few exceptions, I don’t trust many people here as I do elsewhere. This city has been taken over and is no longer “American” anymore; I wish I could move (but I can’t) as very few people have any manners here, much less even care about anyone or anything other than themselves. It’s a shame because this town is beautiful but my advice is to come here for a nice vacation and then go home to your town where you have less rude drivers, nicer neighbors, decent jobs, and true friends.

I’m from Miami. Born in LA but raised here for over 20 years. People here very vain and materialistic. ESPECIALLY the women, it’s how they are raised to be. The “culture ” here sucks donkey nuts, if you’re a genuinely nice person forget about it, they will eat you alive here. I’ve met New Yorkers that were nicer. I’m saving up some money so i can move the hell out. Oh yeah and the stupid white wannabe racist cubans that discriminate you if you are not one of them. hate em

Tiffany says:

I’m from Miami and am considered very “American” compared to other Miamians…..I’ve lived in other states in the US for school and absolutely HATE US culture. I adore Miami….yes, it’s a city run by minorities….but at least race isn’t a taboo subject. Neither is sex or sexual orientation. In Miami you can be human and have friends of all sorts! It’s beautiful! I love having friends that are Indian (from India), Chinese, Hispanic, Jewish, Black and gay! In other states in the US my friends would all be judged as terrorists, hell-goers, construction workers, taxi drivers, thugs, poor and uneducated. In other states, race and religion define you. Period. Even in mor “progressive” places like Nashville. Disgusting. Considering this, I can understand how Americans hate Miami….Miami culture reeks of Hell to them. In other states, individuality and sex appeal are signs of immorality and that’s what Miami is made of!

Miami is full of a$$ holes

I have been living here for ten years and I hope some day soon I can get my family out of here.

Sometimes I wonder why people just can’t be civilized in a town with so much potential

Miami is the worst city ever. I don’t have much to say about Miami because you all summed it up. I lived there for 30 years and had to get out. The beaches are not all that beautiful they look baron and without life full of abnoxious people. People are extremely rude and have no manners. Every time you go outside someone tries to pick a fight with you for no reason at all. Is it the Water you guys drink there that make you so crazy? When i moved my family out i told my wife not to look back or she would be turned into a salt statue. It is like living in Sodom and Gomorrah. Not a good place to raise you kids. I moved to Orlando and it is becomming more and more like Miami as well. I will be moving out of Florida completely to another state where people act human not like animals.

Mario says:

The lowlife ghetto lazy cubans have ruined this nice city. They are the culprit of no-english loudmouthed rude customer service. I really despise them, just drive a little north to Fort Lauderdale or to Broward county and it’s another world. Typical cubans will live in a dump yet drive a brand new car and they treat everyone as if we were in their stupid third world country. I’ve met so many nice latin people that have told me the same things that they can’t stand them either.  Even if you speak spanish they will try to convince you to learn cuban spanish or the typical cuban spanglish (which is terrible and makes me cringe) I tell them I won’t adopt their expressions because we’re in the US, not cuba, so they’ll discriminate mexicans, colombians or venezuelans. I wish they were all expelled back where they belong.

Jopopoe says:

Im european and I can’t stand Miami myself, I love the Latino population , but can’t stand Cubans. To me Cubans do not fall in the Latino Branch.
Yes I have met a few Cubans that were an exception (not racist and open minded) , but these are only a hand full.
In my opinion , Miami is not part of the USA anymore , but more an extension of Cuba.
I’m planning on leaving this city soon , and will never come back…like ever.
I been all around the world , Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Miami was by far the worst experience in my life time.

I am getting my masters degree at Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale. I feel like I have to super dumb down - not at the school but going out, meeting people, etc. If I say a word larger than 4 letters, I intimidate people. I enjoy the night life, fashion, and the ability to network…but damn, I feel isolated from a majority of the population. It is not my fault that I am educated and work hard at bettering myself. My circle is like 3 people, in which none of us are from here. Im good on this place, once I finish, I am out. I would not move here if I were a millionaire.

Oh…everyone has a BMW. Seriously, when the economy tanks, I wonder how many people will still have them. To pull women, you have to be dumb as rocks or filthy rich. It is so weird. I have never had issues pulling women, at all. And the women here are beautiful, but it is too much of a game - and they are dumb. Not all but a majority. So I will take my talents away from South Beach.

Nice weather! It will inspire you to work out. Oh yeah the posts above, this is the number state for HIV. I believe it. Just take what I say with a grain of salt, I definitely maximized the city. You will meet people from all over the world. If you are nice to the right person, YOU WILL STAND THE F*** OUT. Being nice here is like a weakness. Open the door for a women, and she just looks at you. No thank you or anything. Spanish women turned me off living here too. You are not white person! I love all colors, as I am a black guy, but really?? Caribbean too, the hell. You all are rude! I am nowhere a xenophobe, I love people from all over the world! Here, ha!

Hope I gave you some insight. Beautiful city, un-beautiful people. I am not generalizing, but you would have to live here to see it. Black, White, Asian, etc. If you are not from here and decide to live here, you will be leaving in a few years.

Cesar says:

I’m from Brazil and I went to Miami for Vacations and it was the worst thing I could do in my live. The issues started at the airport with people with bad attitude.
At the hotel the receptionist didn’t recognize my early checking even when I showed the printed e-mail I exchanged with hotel manager. The receptionist started screaming and told me to leave the hotel otherwise he would call the police! I staied 3 hours on the street until the issues in the hotel got resolved.
My credit card for blocked 4 times and everytime I called the bank, they say that it is for my own security because this a risk area for credit card transactions with many fraud.
The people like to show that they drive a BMW or expensive cars or live in big houses. In other trip to Miami for work, a co-worker told me:- If you need me to pick up at at the hotel, you need to help me in advance, because I need to decide if I’m going to use my BMW convertibe or my (I don’t remember the other brand, but it was expensive car). People like to show more than enjoy good things in life.
