Ladies Football Team Prepare for Season at FIU Stadium

There’s nothing more sexy than a lady who likes football. Well maybe a lady who dons lingerie and plays football. And plays to win.

The aptly named Miami Caliente held its first tryout on Friday in preparation for the 2010 season. More than 70 women attended the tryouts in the hope of earning a spot on the team.

Less than 10 were eventually chosen. And that’s just the initial cuts.

These women not only have to be able to hit hard and run fast and be able to catch a ball on the fly, they need to look good doing it.

“We look for three different things in our athletes,” said Mitch Mortaza, founder of the Lingerie Football League, who was in Miami on Friday overlooking the talent.

“First and foremost, you have to be beautiful. And we make no bones about it. We gotta be able to market you as a player and the league.

“And second you have to be confident. You have to have an air of confidence to play in your underwear in front of millions of people on television. And lastly but most importantly, is athleticism.”

The ladies are moving to a new field

Last year, the Caliente played in the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise. This year, they will be playing at Florida International University Stadium in west Miami-Dade where they held the tryouts.

“I loved Bank Atlantic Center but the problem was we were pretty far removed from downtown Miami,” Mortaza said.

“We’re trying to get closer and obviously being in a college campus should play really well for us. College is a sweet spot. We expect to have many college students in these end zones.”

The Caliente made the playoffs last year but were eliminated in the first round, finishing at 2-3. They expect to go all the way this year.

Season begins October 15

The Caliente kicks off its season October 15 against the Philadelphia Passion. Tickets went on sale today. Click here for more info on tickets and the team.
