New Times “Best Mile of Miami” (Time Lapse Video)

Miami’s alternative newspaper, New Times, released their “Best of 2010” list. If you didn’t see the paper, the online edition is filled with tons of fun things to do - New Times pulled out the stops, by adding over 350 categories.

This year, a new category that caught my eye was the “Best Mile of Miami”. The editors were going to select the most scenic mile-long drive in the city, which sounded like a cool idea, especially for a tour geek, like me.

And boy was I excited, when I opened the paper and learned the section from Main Highway, Douglas Road, and Ingraham Highway was the winner. Why was I excited? Our tour bus drives down this road, everyday!

In fact, Miami Tour Company is the only tour operator that drives through this part of town, on our way down to Old Cutler Road. See the map.

I thought some of you may like to see what the “best mile of Miami” looks like, and since we have our new forward-facing camera mounted on the bus, I made a short video.

Hope you don’t mind, but we sped up the clip, so you could see a little more of this beautiful highway, which many people say is one of the most scenic drives in the State of Florida!

I guess you could say, New Times considers this area a special place.

This route you took is also known as the Tad Foote Expressway, a favorite route of drunk drivers returning home to UM and points south after a long night in Coconut Grove. Named after former UM president Edward Thaddeus “Tad” Foote, who utilized the route to return to the President’s House in Coral Gables after many such evenings.

I think a night video taken at 4 a.m. with a camera mounted on my car with Guns N’ Roses’ “Night Train” would make for a much more entertaining clip.

That was a nice song…and an equally great video. Hadn’t I read the post I would have thought it was Michael Schumacher driving through the Valencia circuit in Spain. Excellent job on the clip. Anyway, I believe New Times got this one right when they picked the section from Main Highway, Douglas Road, and Ingraham Highway as the winner. Though the highway is a bit narrow, the sights are really awesome.
