Cruisin’ around in a bitchin’ Camaro

Ever since the Miami Vice days, Miami has been a city of fast cars and faster repos. It is a city where young men forsake moving out of their parents’ home so they could afford late model sports cars.

A city where the right car can gain you instant status and instant women. Until they find somebody with a better car, that is.

Me, I’ve always been content driving Hondas, so I’ve never received as much as a second glance in traffic except when I do the traditional Miami cut-off when changing lanes.

But that changed this week when Chevrolet let me borrow a 2011 Camaro RS for seven days through a special program they host where they loan cars to “specific influencers in the market.”

Maybe that means they think I can help them sell the car.

Whether that is true or not, it’s cheaper to loan me the car for a week and have me write (or tweet) about my exploits, which you know I will do, then pay several million dollars for a Super Bowl commercial.

Truth is, I didn’t realize I was an influencer in the market until some random teen asked me for my autograph last night. But that was because he was impressed by the Camaro. Or maybe he genuinely confused me for some celebrity.

Either way, he didn’t look like he could afford the $25,000 price tag, so only time will tell if loaning me the car will pay off for Chevy.

Having the car less than 24 hours, I took the car through one of the most scenic, diverse and historical loops in the county.

Recommended to all visitors who want to cruise Miami but don’t want to stray too far off the beaten path.

I picked up Miami Beach 411’s very own Katalina, who handled the videography as I handled the muscle car.

We started off by driving through downtown Miami, then east over the MacArthur Causeway to Miami Beach.

Then we turned north on Ocean Drive through Miami Beach’s famed Art Deco District, continuing north until Ocean Drive disappeared into Collins Avenue, where we continued north past the famous Fontainebleau Hotel and traveling a few miles north into the neighborhood known as Little Buenos Aires because of its heavy Argentine population. 

Then we turned west on 71st St. and onto the J.F.K. Causeway towards Biscayne Blvd. where we drove down the historical MiMo District.

Then it got dark, so we headed back onto the MacArthur Causeway, exiting on Watson Island to take the above photo.

The above route can easily be done in less than an hour during off-peak hours and is one of the most visually enriching routes in Miami.

But keep in mind that it is only a fragment of what you can really see during your visit to the Magic City.
