Fantasy Football: It’s Not Just For Men Anymore

Remember when fantasy football was just a guys’ thing?

Not anymore.

Every football season, more and more women across the country are joining fantasy football leagues. And they’re not just doing it to meet guys.

On the contrary.

“We’re trying to get away from men,” said Kathy V., who spent draft day last Sunday lounging by a rooftop pool in Miami with five of her best friends.

“That’s why we have an all-girl’s league.”

The name of the league is Sexy Bitches. And the names they give their teams are just as sassy.

Heelz-of-Steel, TouchDown There, Hoes B4 Bros, 1st Down and Dirty and Pretty TDs as in just how it sounds.

These chicks not only know the game, but they talk as much trash as guys. And they party just as hard.

Except with a little more style.

On Sunday, they met up at Natasha A.’s condo on Brickell with a platter of wings from Publix and a bottle of champagne.

Natasha is the commissioner. The only one of the group who has played fantasy football before. Last year, she was the only woman in her league and ended up dominating it, remaining in first place throughout the season until she won the Super Bowl.

But even then, the guys didn’t respect her.

“They said I was cheating,” she said. “They said, you must have some boyfriend. My boyfriend didn’t know anything about football at that time.”

While they were doing their draft, I was sitting at home doing my own draft with our Miami Beach 411 league, organized by Blackford Oakes.

We have ten players, including one woman, LauraB, who said she hasn’t played before. Watch her get inspired with this article.

Our league is called The 305 and our team names range from Miami Locos (me), Team Pylon Dive (Blackford Oakes), Beach Towing (Matt Meltzer’s attempt at irony) and Miami Trafficantes (LauraB showing she is already learning Miami humor).

I’m looking forward to our season but I have to admit, our draft day and team names are lame compared to the Sexy Bitches.

After making their picks in Natasha’s condo, the women ventured to the rooftop pool with a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label and spent the rest of the day talking trash to each other while taking in the sun and listening to music.

Kathy talks the most trash followed by Natasha. But the other girls hold their own and snap right back.

Most guy-dominated leagues tend to focus more on drafting running backs in the first round, but they drafted quarterbacks first.

“The reasoning behind that is because we’re only 8 so we all kinda knew it’s easy to get solid players,” Kathy, who drafted Philip Rivers in the first round, explained in an email.

“Therefore, I wanted my quarterback locked as i was #6 drafting so i could pick my RB right away in round 2 (picked LeSean McCoy).”

Daphe F. went with Michael Vick in the first round.

“He’s a dog killer but that’s cool,” she said. “He better win me some points.”

Diana C. doesn’t talk as much trash as the others, except when you get her going on the battle between the sexes.

“We’re taking over fantasy football just like we do everything else,” she said. “Tennis, soccer; women are taking it all over.”

Check out the video just to get a glimpse of the trash talking.

Blackford Oakes says:

We should offer a challenge for next season. Their top 4 vs our top 4.

I anticipate more forum members will want to join next year after they see the fun we’re having.

I like our league team names but I’m changing mine.

raspberry Glad you like my team name.  I actually have quite a few female friends who are on ff teams.  I am not a major football fan, but like I said before, if the game is going to be on anyway, well may as well make it a bit more interesting.

Great article!

Yesterday, I lent an ear to Playboy Fantasy. Basically two playmates and a dude taking calls about Fantasy Football.

These chicks impressed me with their sexy FF IQ. They had all angles a nuances covered of the subject at hand.
