Flush - A Book By Carl Hiaasen For Young Readers

ABOVE: New York Times Best Seller, FLUSH by Carl Hiaasen; 272 pages.

Flush is everything a long-time Carl Hiaasen reader would expect, perfectly toned-down for a younger audience. It has all the mystery, suspense, and subterfuge of Hiaasen’s other novels, with a little more of what teens might like.

The protagonist, Noah Underwood, is a young teenager living with his family in the Florida Keys. Although the novel focuses on that area, there are many references to Miami throughout, like when Noah’s parents meet at the Dade county courthouse and marry 6 weeks later. Noah’s father, Paine Underwood, is an adamant environmentalist with impulse-control problems. When he suspects a casino boat is pouring sewage directly into the pristine local waters, Paine sneaks in and sinks the vessel. He is taken to jail, leaving Noah, and his sister Abbey, to try and prove that the casino boat owner is the one polluting beaches and killing wildlife.

As usual, there are some shady characters, like Lice Peeking, so named because of his aversion to showers. He turns out to be a pretty good guy, helping the kids get on the boat and get information with the help of his bartender girlfriend Shelly.

There is also the casino boat muscle, a scar-faced man named Luno, who attempts repeatedly to kidnap Noah and Abbey, and a bully, Jasper Jr. Jasper’s dad owns The Coral Queen casino boat and he has a personal grudge against Noah after it sinks. He ambushes and beats on Noah every chance he gets. Although he has personal reasons for beating on Noah, Jasper Jr. represents what many teens face, and readers will be able to identify with Noah’s situation and his reactions.

Hiassen frequently showcases South Florida wildlife, as in scenes where Noah saves a scum-covered sea turtle, or bumps straight into a manatee. He fishes constantly throughout the book and the reader hears about snapper, tarpon, needlefish, blue crab, and many others which, of course, he usually throws back.

Young readers will quickly come to like Noah and his spunky sister Abbey. The two deal with bullying, school, and the possibility of their parents’ divorce, all while solving an important mystery. This is a clever, well-written young adult novel that will encourage a new generation of Florida environmentalists.

"Flush - A Book By Carl Hiaasen For Young Readers"

Michelle says:

Great review, Kristi. I didn’t know Carl Hiaasen wrote kids books.

One question: Did you find it at all a contridication that the kids father sinks the boat? That doesn’t sound so environmently friendly.

SoBeKristi says:

They talk about his contradictions throughout the book. The father never thinks his actions through. He was so angry about the boat that he did the first thing that popped into his head.

I would focus on environmentalism or maybe bullying. They talk alot about fishing and South Florida wildlife, too.

I would call it an environmental mystery. You could also put it in a suspense or comedy category. A review I read called in “genre-spanning.”

Gus says:

Hi chelsea,

I also didn’t like reading until I found Carl Hiaasen and another author named Anne Rice.

Creating a collage of pictures sounds like a fun way to do a book report.

What grade are you in?

Since “Flush” is also about Florida environmentalism, you could also use pictures of the Florida Keys, wildlife, fish and manatees.

Courtney Tate says:

I had to read this book over the summer for school. Last year we had to read “Hoot” by Mr. Carl. I loved “Hoot” so I knew I would at least like “Flush” and I did. We had to write a review for it to prove that we read it in the summer. The neat part was that we had to take 10 scenes from the book and give a reaction or connection to ourselves. There were so many parts of it that I could see myself. I loved the environmental part about “Flush”. We live very close to the Chesapeake Bay.  We have learned that our river “The Nanticoke” is connected to the bay. If we pollute here then eventually the bay will be polluted. So one think connects to another. When we go boating, my Dad always tells us about pollution and how it affects the water quality and the fish. Even something as simple as a plastic soda holder.

Mr. Carl, you did a great job with the book flush. It was even better than your previous book, Hoot, which was great also. But, you really showed some good examples of things that happen in life from the book Flush. And pizzazzz, you spelled horrible wrong.
