Getting A First Tattoo On VacationMy husband, Tony, and I have been talking about getting tattoos for the last couple years. As we were headed to South Beach just before his 40th birthday, I told him it was time to make some decisions because he was getting it done. Armed with a couple pictures from the internet, we walked into Salvation Tattoo Lounge (1413 Washingon Ave, Miami Beach) on a Sunday afternoon (after a FANTASTIC brunch at Nikki Beach, but that’s another story). Tony showed the pictures to Darrin, one of Salvation’s artists, and explained what he wanted. Darrin was back with a drawing within 15 minutes. It was perfect! I have to admit this was my first time in a tattoo shop, and I’ve heard some horror stories, but I was impressed by how clean and welcoming the place was. No dark and scary rooms, but, instead, a well-lit loungy feel with brick walls and comfortable purple couches in front of a big screen TV to hang out while we waited. It may have helped that the staff knew we were from MiamiBeach411.com but I found them to be professional and courteous. So back to Tony and his tattoo…It took Darrin took about an hour and a half to complete the tattoo, with shading, on Tony’s upper arm. I visited the work area while he worked. Darrin wore gloves while he worked. The granite countertop and stainless steel sink were spotless, the chairs looked new. I can honestly say I felt we were in a clean, safe environment. From a germaphobe, this is saying a lot! Here is the final result: Tony was given written instructions for caring for the tattoo while it healed and “Ink Fixx” tattoo lotion and ointment were available for purchase. Our total cost was about $450 + tip (don’t forget to tip your artist!). Going to Salvation was definitely a good experience for us and Tony is very happy with his tattoo.
