Miami’s Graffiti Art Neighborhood (Photo Essay)(This is a guest post by Phil Degenerator, and was promoted to the main blog because it provides great value and interest to our community.) Just across the bridge from South Beach, in the City of Miami proper, the Wynwood neighborhood, a traditionally Puerto Rican barrio, is the epicenter of Miami’s art community. World class private collections, stored in area warehouses, over 50 working galleries, and professional artists blend seamlessly with working class homes and Latino culture. Every month, locals and tourists alike flock to the Second Saturday art walk, an open gallery event that presents works from emerging and internationally renowned artists in a festive atmosphere that usually includes music, free booze, and a lively street scene and spreads across blocks and blocks of the semi industrial warehouse district. The creative environment is literally painted in, for the Wynwood Arts District is also home to one of the finest collections of street art in all of Miami Dade county. Wynwood’s western border, the I-95, offers the most reach via the millions of cars that zoom up the highway. This is where Miami’s so called “Wall of Fame” is located. Every year, Primary Flight, the world’s largest curated outdoor mural project, descends on Miami bringing with it the greatest names in international graffiti culture along with our own locals to redesign our urban landscape with the likeness of cartoons, monsters, devils, angels, and even political messages along with stylized writings of their own names and crews. Most eyes view the work from their vehicles as they drive by, but the wall is easily accessible for curbside enjoyment. These graffiti art finds use in fashion shoots, music videos, and as souvenir images for tourists willing to travel off the beaten path for a taste of the real Miami. For your viewing pleasure, Miami Beach 411 put together a photo essay of Miami’s best graffiti art. Enjoy!
