Help Save Florida ManteesThis summer, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will consider changing the Florida manatee endangered status to threatened. But activists say almost 400 manatees died statewide in 2005. The only other year with a higher death count was 1996, when the state reported 415 manatee deaths. The chance is greater than 50 percent that the species will be extinct in three generations if it’s classified as threatened. An endangered species has a chance greater than 80 percent of becoming extinct in that time period. What You Can Do: Contact Governor Jeb Bush and express your concern. In June, the Commissioners will vote to finalize the manatee’s listing status.
