I’m Bored, What’s There To Do? (Art Basel Edition)
Attention art lovers and all soon-to-be art lovers! It’s here! You cannot be in Miami December 7 – 10 and not know that Art Basel has arrived…Here are the public events. Most of these are free!
Daily
Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), Miami Art Central (MAC), The Marguiles Collection at the Warehouse, and LA Artists from The Rubell Family Collection are open 9am – 12pm daily, with some exceptions. See the individual listings for more information.
Art Boat Tour, viewing art by boat on Biscayne Bay, 9am – 12pm daily through December 9. Pick up and drop off is at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Contact Miami Duck Tours at (786) 276-8300 for more information.
Halls A & D of the Miami Beach Convention Center, the main venue of Art Basel Miami Beach, will be open daily 12pm – 8pm. Special sections include Art Nova (“new artâ€), Art Kabinetts (curated exhibits), and Art Magazines. Art Salon at the Art Guest Lounge (entrance to Lobby D) will feature artist talks, book signings, and roundtable discussions. The Botanical Gardens Building at the Botanical Gardens is the site for Art Video Lounge (video art) and Art Sound Lounge (sound program to be heard with wireless headphones while wandering the gardens) 11am – 8pm daily.
Art Kids, a collaboration with Miami Children’s Musem, is a children’s care center for parents visiting Art Basel. Open 12pm - 8pm December 7 - 9 and 12pm - 6pm December 10, children will be suprvised by well-trained Miami Children’s Museum staff who will entertain them with arts and crafts, art history and story telling.
Collins Park Beach, between 21st St and 22nd St, is the site for Art Positions (converted shipping containers with young gallery exhibits), Art Perform, Artist DJs, Open Air Cinema (program of music videos), and Art Projects (works of art in public places) 2pm – 10pm daily.
Art Bar @ The Delano Pool Bar (beginning December 5) and Art Lounge @ SKYBAR at the Shore Club begin nightly at 10pm.
Wednesday, December 6
Opening night is at Collins Park Beach on December 6 with Art Positions open 6pm - 10pm, Artist DJ with Miami’s own DJ Le Spam 7pm - 10pm, and Art Loves Music 10pm - 11:30pm with electro-punk icon Peaches.
Thursday, December 7
In addition to the daily events on December 7, there is a Wynwood Art District Tour 9am - 12pm, which will include over 40 art spaces (see the VIP desk at the Convention Center for maps); a public discussion between architect Jacques Herzog and Miami Art Museum (MAM) Director Terence Riley 10am - 11am at MAM; and the Artist DJ at Collins Beach Park is Las Chancletas Vanguardistas 7pm - 9pm. There will also be a Freedom Tower Inauguration 8:30pm - 11pm at 600 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami.
Friday, December 8
Art Tours of the Miami Design District are 9am - 12pm December 8 (see the VIP desk at the Convention Center for maps); a Design Talk entitled “Blurred Boundaries: Design as Business” at the Moore Building (4040 NE 2nd Ave, Miami) 6pm - 8pm; the Artist DJ is Yoshua Okon 7pm - 9pm; and Art Loves Film at the Colony Theater 8:30pm - 11pm will feature Dennis Hopper presenting ‘Easy Rider’ (tickets available at the VIP and Information desks at the Convention Center). There’s also a New World Student Exhibition at the New World Gallery (25 NE 2nd St, Miami Beach) 8pm - 9pm.
Saturday, December 9
December 9 is a busy night with Artist DJ A Gentil Carioca 7pm - 9pm; Art Loves Design in the Miami Design District 8:30pm - midnight, in which two city blocks will be closed (NE 2nd Ave between 39th and 40th St) for the viewing of design and art exhibits, and, 9pm -10pm, a discussion with designer Marc Newson will take place (DASH High School Courtyard, 4001 NE 2nd Ave); and Art Loves Film at the Colony Theater 8:30pm - 11pm will feature a film by Alison Chernick entitled
‘No Restraint: Matthew Barney’ (tickets available at the VIP and Information desks at the Convention Center).
Sunday, December 10
Closing day of Art Basel features Breakfast in the Park 9:30am - 12pm at The Martin Z. Margulies Sculpture Park at FIU (11200 SW 8th St, Miami), including an informal discussion with American sculptor Deborah Butterfield and guided tours of the park.
If all this isn’t enough, there is more art to see around Miami at the NADA Fair at the Ice Palace, Chinese Contemporary Art at the Mandarin Oriental, Scope Miami at Roberto Clemente Park, photo MIAMI at the SOHO Building, flow Miami and the Bridge Art Fair at the Catalina, INK Miami at the Dorchester, Aqua Art at the Aqua Hotel, Frisbee Art Fair and Pool at the Cavalier, Swarovski Crystal Palace at the Paris Theater (550 Washington Ave, Miami Beach), Zones at the World Arts Building (2214 N. Miami Ave, Miami), Pulse Miami in the Wynwood District, the DiVA Fair at Lummus Park, Design Miami at the Moore Building, and plenty of events at VINO Miami.
