Stop Dumping Flyers On The Street

June 18, 2006 By Gus in Miami: Local News  | 4 Comments

If you have ever walked down Washington Avenue on a Saturday or Sunday morning, no doubt you have to wade through a mass of club flyers that litter the street.

City Commissioner Saul Gross wants to clean up the mess by drafting an ordinance to ban the distribution of flyers on certain city streets.

It makes perfect sense. Miami Beach already prohibits advertising on public property without city approval. This means leaving fliers on newsstands and light poles is against the law. So why is it ok for club promoters to dump flyers on the street?

Officials say the problem is especially acute during holiday weekends. At the last City Commission meeting, City Manager Jorge Gonzalez said during the five-day Memorial Day weekend, city employees collected more than 80 tons of trash and litter, 75 percent of which were posters and handbills.

By comparison, on a typical weekend, city employees collect about six to eight tons of trash and litter, said Al Zamora, director of the sanitation division for Miami Beach.

For a city that prides itself on being a world class vacation destination, this garbage is a black eye on Miami Beach. Who it really effects is the tourists who are paying lots of money to visit here. They wake up early to explore the city, and the first impression they see is our streets littered with trash.

The City Attorney plans to unveil a draft of the ordinance within the next month.

Go get ‘em Saul. It’s time to clean up the streets. We’re behind you 100%.

Well said, Gus. I am very suprised this problem has not been addressed sooner.

You are right in saying “Who it really effects is the tourists”.

Would you invite a guest to stay at your home, and not clean-up before they arrived? I guess some people would, but not this girl. My mom taught me better than that.

Keep up the good work.

Gus says:

Yes, you’re right, it’s a total waste of paper.

Greener Miami says it perfectly:

“When are advertisers going to learn that people don’t look at fliers? It’s also the one piece of trash that apparently no one has an issue with tossing directly on the ground”

It’s like tossing the flyers on the ground is a passive-aggressive way of saying FU to all the promoters and door men that never let us into the club.

The bad thing is, most of these flyers are never handed out. Too often, I’ve seen promoters walking down the street, tossing flyers on the ground, like they’re planting seeds in a field.

I’m going to coin a new phrase. Let’s call it “Litter Advertising”. It’s the practie of dropping flyers on the ground with the hope that some schlep will walk by and pick one up.

Note to City: Litter advertising should be outlawed in Miami Beach.

Yeah! I’m not the only one! This has become one of my personal battles. We need to stop this in general, and be on extra lookout when there are special events in town. The Heat parade tomorrow, South Beach events, the SuperBowl, etc.

Something I do is contact the companies directly have sponsored the fliers, and hope that helps in some way.

Some tips I recommended with my first post on this back in February:

1) I would like to ask everyday people that are offered fliers not to accept them.
2) If you accept them and are not interested in the product or service, please return the flier to the person handing them out.
3) And finally, if you DO accept the flier and you DON’T return it to the person, at the very least, please put that flier in a trash receptacle.
