Summer in Miami: Can You Hack It?I am well aware the official beginning is not for nearly three weeks, but for all intents and purposes, it’s now officially summer. As soon as Channel 7 starts giving us daily updates about dust storms in Angola that may turn into a Category 5, the year’s hottest season is upon us. And despite the lamentations of many a South Floridian, summer is my favorite time of year to be in Miami. Because summer, well, that’s what separates the Men from the Boys. It’s real easy to consider yourself a loving Miamian when it’s 80 degrees in December, who the Hell doesn’t enjoy that? It’s easy to say “I love this town!†in March when it’s a 30-day party and the weather is perfect. But you wanna be a local? Then love it when it’s 93 degrees and you can’t walk to your mailbox without breaking a sweat. IT’S HARD NOT HAVING A CAR IN A DRIVING MONSOON For a lot of recent transplants, summer is the first time they have that “I’m not sure this was such a good idea†moment. Like the first time someone issues a hurricane warning the same day you ran out of milk, and you have to wait in a 45-minute line just to get simple groceries. Or when you run out to Walgreen’s to get some gum and end up standing at the entrance for 20 minutes waiting for the storm to pass so you can get home. Or maybe you decided to ignore all sane advice to the contrary and moved here without a car, figuring your bicycle was enough. And you end up having to bike home in a driving thunderstorm, and all your groceries fall out of your enviro-friendly paper bags. YOU MEAN I CAN’T GO TO THE BEACH FOR A WEEK?! That first time you go to the beach on a seemingly perfect day, and find the sand too hot to lay on is a nice eye-opener. Much like when you go in the water to cool off and find yourself hotter than when you got in. That is, of course, if it didn’t start raining 10 minutes after you got there, even though the sky looked cloudless when you left your house. Or when it rains, all day every day, for almost a week solid. Happens every year. God forbid you have to live through a week without power or gas because of a major hurricane. But it’s always possible….. LOCAL OR LONG-TERM TOURIST? The thing about summer is, it keeps Miami real. It’s when the people who only love the city for its warm winters go home, and the people who live here for real are left. When the people that thought this was going to be the Travel Channel realize that living here can be hard, and that not every day is a beach day. Much like people say about Chicago, it’s easy to love part of the year, but you gotta make it through the worst to know it’s where you want to be. Summer has its own pace and its own feel, and that is why it’s my favorite season. It’s when Miami stops feeling like a party capital and starts feeling like a real city. And while that might scare some who thought life here would be a perpetual vacation, it makes me love it even more. Welcome to Miami Summer, newcomers and snowbirds. Let’s see what you got…

Great article, I laughed as I read it and recognised many true aspects of life in Miami in summer. I feel like a real local now as I do love the rain and getting caught in it on my bike. Not missing the beach either. But tell me, is that first photo for real…?
