Women have come a long way in this country from the days that they couldn’t vote and were not allowed to attend college and were not allowed to own property.
But they still have not reached full equality with men. At least when it comes to taking off their shirts.
Only one state has made it legal for women to walk around in public topless in the same manner that men do. And that is New York. And only because of a 1992 court ruling that said it cannot be illegal for a women to be topless if it is legal for a man to be topless.
However, in 2005, 25-year-old Jill Coccaro was arrested in New York City after she removed her top in public. She sued and won $29,000 two years later.
There have been other landmark victories for the so-called topfree movement.
But despite the laws that forbid women from being topless in most other states, most women don’t seem overly concerned about walking around topless. If anything, the real battle is over breastfeeding in public.
However, one group of women – who happen to believe that life on earth was created by aliens – are doing all they can to make it legal to bare their breasts in public.
After all, they argue, the aliens didn’t provide them breasts to keep them covered.
On Sunday, the women and men from GoTopless.org, who are Raelists, took to the streets of Miami Beach; New York; Chicago; Portland, Oregon; Columbus, Ohio; and Maui, Hawaii and took off their tops in protest.
Well, down here, they kept little nipples pasties to prevent themselves from getting arrested as they marched down Lincoln Road, chanting “free your mind, free your breasts.â€
If the shock factor was what they were after, they failed to get it. After all, bare breasts sans pasties are plentiful on the sands of South Beach.
Most people just looked on amused. A few took photographs. Some women even flashed their own breasts.
In fact, Mr. Clucky has gotten more attention on Lincoln Road than these three almost topless women.
It was anticlimactic considering they spent more than a month hyping up the event, sending jolts of excitement through a few local photographers who ended up encountering more men protesting in bras than women protesting without bras.
However, in Keene, New Hampshire over the weekend, a group of protesters who are not part of the Raelists movement but part of the free state movement, took to the streets wearing open holstered handguns.
One of the gun-strapped protesters was an 18-year-old woman named Cassidy Nicosia was also not wearing a shirt. She ended up arrested for indecent exposure.
So breasts are obviously more threatening than loaded handguns.
Breasts were a common theme in paintings and sculptures and fashion throughout the era. From Wikipedia:
Breast-baring female fashions have been traced to fifteenth-century courtesan Agnès Sorel, mistress to Charles VII of France, whose gowns in the French court sometimes exposed one or both of her breasts. (Jean Fouquet’s portrayal of the Virgin Mary with her left breast uncovered is believed to have taken Sorel as a model.)
Similar fashions became popular in England during the seventeenth century when they were worn by Queen Mary II and by Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I of England, for whom architect Inigo Jones designed a masque costume that fully revealed both of her breasts.[4]
However, the United States has always been influenced by Puritans, so this mentality remained ingrained in our culture.
Topless sunbathing for Europe has been popular in Europe since the mid 1960s, but it only started catching on in Miami during the late 1980s with a sudden influx of European tourists (there have been segregated nude beaches since the 1970s).
So it is technically illegal for a woman to take off her top, but it’s been tolerated since then because, after all, tourists are bringing in money.
But we still don’t know what will happen if a women walks completely topless down Lincoln Road.
Maybe we’ll finally find out during next year’s protest.

These folks are simply pointing out the inconsistency between men being allowed to go topless but not women, and asking that all people be treated the same under the law regardless of gender. Frankly I think the fact that you automatically equate breasts with sex says more about you than anything else.
However, Maria is right - there are more worthy causes to spend one’s limited time and energy on.

However, think about the 1920’s when women’s voting wasn’t legal and what a big deal suffrage was. Or even before that, black people! When a human embryo is first starting to develop, the nipples are created before the gender is decided. If you’re concerned about it being the size of the breast area then overweight men should not be allowed to go topless and flat chested girls should be able to be topless then! The biggest problem here is that breast have become associated more with sex than they are with nutrition for infant children. I blame that on things like Playboy and the porn industry. I agree completely. Women are not looking at this as a sexual act as most other people are. It is an act of self-expression such as a man or woman dressing in black or wearing a cross as a Christian person would. Were Adam and Eve in the Bible not created naked? I am not a Christian but I know for a fact that they were supposedly created nude. It was only when they ignored God’s rule that they began to realize that they were nude and began to be self-conscious. I do not agree that these women should be prosecuted for baring what is natural and what is beautiful.

Yes, there are more important things to worry about in the world, so why not get over such a simple thing as a boob and move on? The women will be happy, many men will be happy at seeing it, and eventually it will be a common thing.

I think this fact alone should be taken into serious consideration. Why, on a piping hot day, can men cool themselves by removing their tops while women have to keep their tops on despite the heat created between/underneath breasts in the first place?
The perversion of boobs has been entirely fabricated. There are entire countries populated by women who live bare-breasted.
Say what you will about God creating us differently; about female breasts being private; about it being indecent, stupid, pointless, unimportant—it is, truly, the principle of the matter.

Hmmm…. this is a very interesting subject…. as it can go both ways indeed. The thing for some people is the “comfort factor” like disturbing the peace in a way. And not to bring in religion but god DID create people naked… and we wore clothes to originally keep warm…. then since the cavemen wore them and humans have ever since we kinda acted like we NEED them. I think since guys don’t get to see “nudity” that it makes it perverted” cuz if everybody was always naked then there would be no secrets I suppose? It is intended to be “step one” of a whole big program of the nudists. and it might interest you to know that many people (such as myself…whose bodies are private) would never go to a topless beach or carnivale in Brazil, nor hotel pool in Europe where nudity will exist. I avoid all such places and have every right to. I should not be forced to have it in my face on public streets in an unavoidable situation. It is WRONG. People everywhere need to complain loudly every time it happens. and the consitution does NOt say they have a right to protest nude. obscentiy laws are determined by local town and state levels and it IS your community job to determine what is indecent in public. YES you are supposed to regular immorality in your own community. And I will live in a community that values modesty. if another community allows public perversity I will never go there. As for the breast thing, I believe what some of the others are saying, and will add some of my own, that the law is in place because women are physically different from men, and nothing anyone can say is different, women has breasted, men do not, (don’t feed me that crap that men also have breasts, they are just smaller, you know they are different) and because of that, there is a law. Also, my point is that we live in a society where breasts are extremely sexualized, and have been since the Renaissance, and if women went around naked, there would probably be a higher level of rape than before because it would set men off, BUT not every man of course, not every man is a sick pervert, just the ones who have trouble controlling themselves. This would probably last for the first decade or so until society were to change, if it changed, you must understand that 500 years of societal evolution has created a very sexual aspect of breasts, and it would be very difficult to filter that sexual aspect, if ever.

I don’t approve of it because I think that modesty reflects a respect that one has for their own body. I feel the same way for men as well. In my opinion, men and women who don’t expose what is most sacred to them (their bodies) except to those they love and trust more than anyone is a very important part of self respect.

There is nothing wrong with a woman showing her breasts in public. Breasts are only sexual because in the USA we are taught again and again that they are, but if you think about it, how is a woman’s chest more involved in sex than a mans? If you think that breasts will arouse men, shirtless muscular guys with six packs arise women as well, at that sight if women could somehow get boners, many probably would.
And about the whole children issue, babies suck on nipples all the time, I highly doubt that children will be scarred for life at the sight of a topless woman, especially if it is on a regular basis (i. e. at the beach).
Things that are kept hidden cause more attention than things that aren’t.
If anything, breasts are beautiful and should be respected as part of the female body and if you don’t believe that, just accept it, because it is ULTIMATELY SEXIST that one gender can do something on a regular basis that the other can’t. NO EXCUSES.

For those that say that many women are uncomfortable with their bodies and are too embarrassed, SO ARE MANY MEN. If guys are too skinny or too fat or don’t have a great body, most of the time are pointed out and made ashamed of their bodies. Besides, women would a have a choice, (something that men don’t get, if men don’t want to take their shirts off, they are pressured into doing it or often times excluded).
This issue has nothing to do with sex or going naked. TOPLESS IS NOT NAKED. I don’t think that most are saying that people should be allowed to go naked in public. They are just breasts!
CHANGE IS NECESSARY and generally for the better. No matter what its for, there is always resistance. Mohandas Ghandi once said that there are 5 steps for a people/culture to accept change (1)ignore the change, (2) ridicule the change, (3)deny the change (4) attack the change, (5) accept the change
there are many other issues out there like this that will gradually change as well (some being: animals being slaughtered for food, prohibition of marijuana). There was a time when men couldn’t go shirtless, but that changed and so will the laws against women going topless.

I do not know where you are but it is not anywhere around where I work, shop or live. And I do not find it appropriate for men either. It is just showing off your contempt of everyone around you.Ignorance on the part of men is not a good support of the position for women doing it. Just be honest and say you want to be naked. That I can support. Do not try and conceal it under a phony justification for “equality”. Just be naked and stand up for it. More people will support that than you realize.

After that an many of us got drunk sex was ramped The next day when I went to work one of the gals asked me why I didn’t have sex with her and several of the other gals. Later my woman manager called me in and told me I need to become part of the group and next time I need to participate. I work with 15 women and there are only 3 guys including me. Since that time I have been invited to lunch and nights out and told to get with the program. These are all college graduates and high level engineers or programers. Well who says guys are the aggressive sex. Yea the last party I did 3 of the gals and next day was told how nice I was and they were looking forward to be being at a weekend long retreat.
