Miami Man Selling Fold-Up, Urban Bikes At Cut-Rate Price

December 23, 2011 By Carlos Miller in Miami: Local News  | 4 Comments

Most every morning I walk down to my local Cuban joint, Sergio’s, for a shot of potent Cuban espresso, to decide what I’m going to write about that day.

Sometimes I have several potential stories to work on. Other times not so much.

On Wednesday, the story fell on my lap. And I didn’t even have my Flip camera as I usually do.

Luckily, I had my iPhone, which allowed me to record the above video.

Carlos Anton was sitting at a table across from me with this weird little fold-up bicycle by his side.

Usually, I’m grumpy in the morning and I don’t want to do much socializing, but I couldn’t resist asking about the bike.

He wasted no time in giving me a demonstration.

Anton is selling the bike for $80 each, which is a cut-rate price from the $200 he is selling them for on his website.

He explains that two years ago, he imported 800 of the bicycles from China, which at the time were being marketed for Europe. He sold 500 of them before sales slowed down.

Now he wants to unload the last 300 bicycles in order to invest in an invention. Yes, not only is he an entrepreneur, he’s an inventor and an actor.

“I was famous in Cuba,” said the 48-year-old who has lived in Miami for 23 years. “People stop me on the streets all the time because they recognize me.”

In Cuba, he started in stage plays and television soap operas. In Miami, pursued the American dream of carving out his own niche.

“I want to reinvest my money in solar energy,” he said. “I want to invent three-wheel bicycle that is powered by the sun to help people in the Caribbean.

”I already have engineers who are helping me conceive this bicycle.”

The fold-up bicycle he is selling comes with carrying case, air pump, tool kit and instructions.

It’s not the most comfortable looking bicycle but it’s not meant for long distances, he said.

It’s more of an urban bike, perfect for riding to the Metrorail before folding it up and carrying it inside with you, then using it ride to your office in downtown, for example.

Or just riding around your neighborhood to do errands. It would be perfect for the South Beach resident.

At $80, it might even serve as the perfect last-minute Christmas gift for that person who has everything.

If interested in the discount, call him directly on his cell phone at (786) 306-3074.

There is an electric bike program coming to South Beach/Miami as well. I’ve been offered one for review. It’s like a moped but you don’t need a license for it.
