Vacation Horror Stories Weekend

Have you ever had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad vacation?
May 01, 2009 By Gus in Miami: Travel News  | 14 Comments

OK, you researched the destination, bought all the guidebooks, and purchased your tickets. Everything is set to have a vacation of a lifetime. What could possibly go wrong? Well, as you probably know, vacations don’t always go quite the way you planned.

This weekend, Miami Beach 411 is showcasing a collection of vacation horror stories that are sure to make you think twice before traveling with friends. And why are we doing this, you ask? So we can learn from other peoples mistakes.

First up, Kimmy video about their trip to South Beach, Miami:

What did Kimmy learn on her trip?:

  • How to get a free airline ticket
  • The truth about nightclub wristbands
  • Never put on your bathing suit, when it’s cold outside
  • Service in South Beach is awful
  • Club Mango’s seating policy is ridiculous
  • If you want to have a relaxing vacation, don’t travel with wild friends

"Vacation Horror Stories Weekend"

Carlos Miller says:

I can’t believe I sat through those two videos. I want my 20 minutes back.

This woman was a complete downer during her trip to Miami and is mad that her friend was actually having fun.

And she expects us to sympathize with her?

Whatever. She belongs in that Ft. Lauderdale Geritol crowd.

Gus says:

No way. I totally disagree. I love Kimmy’s video. Everyone should watch both parts. It sucks when friends fight on vacation.

Carlos Miller says:

Well she didn’t even fill us in on that “embarrassing” episode so why even bring it up?

Posted on 05/01/2009 at 2:38 PM

Gus says:

Yeah, I asked her about that, but she never replied. I’m guessing she’s the modest-type and lost her bathing suit top in the water.

My vacation horror story was in Costa Rica. I lost my rental car keys, while my renal car was parked on the beach, with an approaching tide. I was barefoot and 10 miles from town. Some guy made me change his flat tire in exchange for a ride. Thankfully, I got the car out in time, but the day was a total bummer.

Is anyone watching “Locked Up Abroad” on National Geographic?.. That show has great vacation horror stories.

Sungal says:

OMG! I suddenly realize why editors exist!! I almost made it to 7 minutes but puh-leez get to the point already!

And from what I’m reading in the comments, she does not even share the horror/embarrasing moment!

This is what happens when people come to Miami and don’t go to our site. We could’ve pointed her in the right direction- I have a feeling they would’ve liked Monty’s and a pool-side happy hour.

If you’ve read it can you state what happened in 2 sentences?

Gus says:

“If you’ve read it can you state what happened in 2 sentences?”

It’s a classic story. The conflict was, Kimmey wanted a relaxing vacation, but Corey had a different idea of what she wanted to do. Now, the two women aren’t speaking anymore.

If you ask me, Corey sounds like a floosie. Guys love meeting girls like her on vacation.

Posted on 05/01/2009 at 5:29 PM

Gus says:

Most of Cory’s inappropriate behavior happens in Part 2 at Mango’s, of course.

Posted on 05/01/2009 at 5:46 PM

Sungal says:

They are both big girls. Kimmy played the martyr by suffering at Mango’s when she could’ve gone back to the hotel room and had the relaxing evening she wanted. She’s the annoying one that ruined her friend’s fun night of drinking and dancing in Miami.

Posted on 05/01/2009 at 11:37 PM

Carlos Miller says:

Yes, Sungal, editors exist for a reason. We don’t need eight minutes of her to tell us what she is going to tell us. We just need her to tell us what she is going to tell us.

Which evidently was a lot of whining.

I guess that’s the difference between men and women. Two guys go on vacation, if one of them is tired, he goes back to the room and allows the other one to have fun.

That’s why they call it vacation. Or holiday. Or whatever.

It’s South Beach, which is renowned for partying. If she wanted to be in by midnight, she has every right to be be in by midnight. It’s her vacation, after all.

But don’t screw up it for her friend.

And when it’s all said and done, don’t try to justify her behavior by posting a lame ass video about it, which is basically calling her friend out.

Is she a friend or not?

I guess not.

This woman showed her true colors with those two videos.

I want to see Corey’s video.

That is only fair. To hear the other side of the story.

Dr. Annie Steelclit says:

So far everything I’ve read/seen in this series is people playing victim, blindly criticizing South Florida, spouting out insulting stereotypes, lashing out with personal gripes, getting drunk and not taking responsibility for their actions or words.  The horror here is *not* the destination!

Posted on 05/04/2009 at 12:59 AM

Laurie says:

Gus, I have to agree with Carlos. I want my 20 minutes back, too. This is NOT a vacation horror story. Vacation horror stories involve flight delays, hotel problems, lack of transportation, bad service, theft, etc. This was whining. And she didn’t tell us anything about South Beach we didn’t already know. You mislead us.

Posted on 05/04/2009 at 9:40 PM

Gus says:

Dr. Annie, the destinaion was never meant to be the subject of the writer’s horror stories. Rather, I wanted them to highlight the actions people take that end up ruining their vacation.

Posted on 05/05/2009 at 6:06 AM

Gus says:

Laurie, I’m sorry you didn’t like the videos. It was never my intention to mislead anyone. I really like them, and thought they might make people laugh at how little things can make a vacation go sour.

As far as not learning anything new about South Beach, I disagree. If you read some of the nightlife-related discussions in the forum, you’d see that fears about what to wear in South Beach, where to go, and fitting in are all recurring themes. If people with these fears happen to watch Kimmy’s videos, they might see that they’re not alone, and perhaps their concerns are not that big a deal. Not to mention, who new that Mango’s could be so rude to a couple of naive tourists. I’ll think twice before recommending Mango’s again.

The biggest lesson I learned from Kimmy’s videos was, vacations don’t always go as we plan, so don’t get stuck on the agenda, especially when you’re traveling with people you don’t know.

Like I said at the beginning of this post, my intention is for us to learn from other people’s mistakes.

I’ve acted like a victim when things don’t go my way. Next time I’m feeling that way, I’ll try to remember Kimmy.

Dr. Annie Steelclit says:

Actually, Gus, come to think of it, it’s interesting how we each interpret what is/is not a vacation horror story.  You’re right though, it’s really important to go with the flow when you’re in a situation you can’t control, especially away from home.  That’s very good advice!
