What to know before moving to Miami

April 24, 2006 By Michelle in Miami: Local NewsMiami: Travel News  | 2 Comments

Have you come to Miami on vacation and thought to yourself, I could really get used to living here?

If you haven’t already heard, there’s a New Miamian in town. Her name is MiamiGirl. She started an interesting conversation about why it’s so difficult to call Miami home.

“I think that the constant flow of different languages is hard for some who move here. In Miami there are two languages, English and Spanish and then there is also a constant sub flow of others.  My theory is that for some who migrate here…it is a constant taxing on the brain and therefore hard to relax.  Difficult to “feel at home”.

But even though I tell myself that that could be the case… if the different cultures thing is hard for some who come to Miami to accept then why doesn’t this happen in multicultural places such as LA or in NY?  What makes Miami so hard?”

I’ve been living here for 11 years. Here are 7 things you should know before moving to Miami:

1. If you don’t speak Spanish, don’t expect to understand what most people are saying.

2. Different cultures communicate in different ways. A lack of understanding will make you feel that people are very unfriendly.

3. There is an excess of crime, drugs, and alcoholism.

4. The cost of living is high but salaries are low.

5. The Miami school system is not good. Did you know people protested to make the student achivement tests easier because so many schools in Miami received F’s? I would not want to raise my children here.

6.
People never stay for long, making it hard to build a real friendship.

7. The heat makes people crabby.

I tried to move away once; it lasted 3 months. I couldn’t wait to move back to Miami. Go figure.

Check out what else MiamiGirl has to say. I’m really enjoying her blog. I have added it to our list of recommended sites.
